Introducing the Island in the city series - in this post series I’m diving deep into the creative souls of Helsinki's biggest island Laajasalo, follow along!

Esittelyssä leikkimielisesti nimetty Saarielämää kaupungissa -sarjani. Tässä juttusarjassa sukellan syvälle Helsingin suurimman saaren, Laajasalon, luovien sielujen maailmaan – seuraa mukana!

First up: Annamari Kuvaja

As stated by Annamari, Laajasalo is a green, seaside oasis close to the city's buzz, yet far from its hustle. For her, the islander that has meant the most is her friend Doris that has a small garden spot on the neighboring island Vartiosaari. The duo has mostly spent time together on Laajasalo jogging, grabbing coffee, and just hanging out.

Kuten Annamari toteaa, Laajasalo on vehreä, merenrantainen keidas lähellä kaupungin sykettä – mutta silti kaukana sen kiireestä. Hänelle tärkein saarelainen on ollut hänen ystävänsä Doris, jolla on pieni puutarhapalsta naapurisaaressa Vartiosaaressa. Kaksikko on viettänyt enimmäkseen aikaa yhdessä Laajasalossa lenkkeillen, kahvitellen ja vain oleillen. 

Annamari’s most important places on the island are Tullisaari Park, Yliskylä Beach, Matosaari Island, and the Aittasaari Island (nowadays half-island). These are spots she misses the most when she’s away, and she always feels the need to return to them. Annamari would take a friend to Tullisaari, which has impressed everyone that she’s ever brought there.

Annamarin tärkeimmät paikat saarella ovat Tullisaaren puisto, Yliskylän uimaranta, Matosaari ja Aittasaari (nykyisin niemimäinen). Hän ikävöi näitä paikkoja aina poissa ollessaan ja kokee vahvaa tarvetta palata niiden äärelle. Ystävän hän veisi Tullisaareen – se on tehnyt vaikutuksen kaikkiin, kenet hän on sinne vienyt. 

She thinks Laajasalo’s culture is often close to nature and very community oriented. Island events emphasize the importance of togetherness. People value greenery and the proximity to the sea, which shows in daily habits like outdoor activities and cycling.

Annamarin mielestä Laajasalon kulttuuri on usein luonnonläheistä ja yhteisöllistä. Saarella järjestettävät tapahtumat korostavat yhteenkuuluvuuden merkitystä. Ihmiset arvostavat vihreyttä ja meren läheisyyttä, mikä näkyy arjen tavoissa, kuten ulkoilussa ja pyöräilyssä. 

Annamari hopes Laajasalo becomes an even more attractive place to live while preserving its connection to the natural world. She’s a bit concerned about overdevelopment and hopes for more efforts to protect Laajasalo’s green beauty. Her relationship with Laajasalo feels homey: she’s always happy to return to the island from the hustle and bustle of the city center. She’s lived on the island for several years, almost a decade, and the island feels like a part of her – Annamari’s deeply attached to its landscapes and community.

Annamari toivoo, että Laajasalosta tulisi vieläkin houkuttelevampi asuinpaikka – kuitenkin säilyttäen yhteyden luontoon. Hän on hieman huolissaan liiallisesta rakentamisesta ja toivoo enemmän toimia saaren vihreyden suojelemiseksi. Hänen suhteensa Laajasaloon on kodinomainen: hän on aina iloinen palatessaan saarelle keskustan hälinästä. Hän on asunut Laajasalossa jo lähes kymmenen vuotta, ja saari tuntuu osalta häntä itseään – Annamari on syvästi kiintynyt sen maisemiin ja yhteisöön.
